Great job on this one Brian, you said there would be changes for the better, and there were - even the weather!!! . From our perspective everything was great!

I'll second that Brian put on a great event. Even the announcer was an improvement. My only compliant was that the backside of the brackets wasn't provided. Admittedly, that is grasping for something to whine about.

I agree totally! The tournament ran smoothly, and my view as a table worker was that there was a lot of good sportsmanship displayed today.
I want to single out High Altitude and commend them on their sportsmanship, and as a club-they always show class-win or lose! And congrats on winning the team trophy!
There's was alot of good matches and good competition going on today. If you missed this one- I would definitely catch it next year.

Thank you Brian on an excellent tournament today. My son's bracket had great competition. Having Rulon Gardner there to hand out awards was absolutely awesome. He was great with the kids, kidding around with them, signing autographs, and posing for an endless number of pictures. He is a class act.

I would also like to add that the wrestlers were some of the nicest people at vets today. Helping each other out, shaking hands and being very respectful. Thanks to all of you.

Good point, HAWC has incredible numbers across the state, and by merely showing up they could win this one. Maybe they should break it down by HAWC location, and compete that way, would at least even things out a bit more?
On another note, thought the tournament went well, but there were a couple of awards brackets that fell through the crack. I brought it to the attention of the head table, 1.5 hours after the bracket was done, they then realized that it was never printed and sent out for awards. After another half hour, I brought it to Brian's attention so we could get our awards, and he pretty much told me too bad, i was getting out of there at 4:30 and should be happy with that. I was happy with that, but I could have been out of there about 3:30 if they would not have dropped the ball. Again, great tournament, but I felt that I was basically told to to sit down and shut-up in a nice way. In the end, after bringing it to the attention of the kind woman handling the awards, she strong armed Brian into giving the awards to our bracket winners, thanks!

Very smoothly ran tournament this year... definately one of the best we have been to in a while! Rulon was awesome--what a great idea it was to have him attend! The competition was very good and I really liked the way the announcer spelled out the rules before wrestling started, so everyone knew what the rules were. GREAT JOB BRIAN!!!

Great tournament yesterday! Everything was awsome. Scoreboards in the middle, cleaned the mats, rules overview, concessions, attentive table people, and great announcer. I can't think of a single issue that wasn't addressed. Great job Brian and company! Rulon handing out the awards was the perfect icing on the cake. That guy is perfect, kind and very patient with the kids.

Rulon was great and he was so awesome with the kids. Shaking there hands in a way that made them laugh. Letting all parents get pictures. COOL COOL COOL!!! We had an awesome bracket. We saw some upsets, great matches and most every wrestler had great attitudes. Saw a few biting incidents, head gear thrown, parent thrown out for no reason except for he questioned ref why his boy didn't get some points. This was all towards the end of the day, everyone was getting tired I think. GREAT JOB Dane Jones for winning them all and that was even wrestling a team mate and good friend in the championship round. Good job to everyone from Kaos Gold wrestling club. Great job Brian, it was fun working with you. You make it better and better every year. Good job to all the volunteers and being supportive to this tournament. We had so much fun but gosh we were tired last night. Keep up the hard work everyone to keep wrestling going so good in Iowa.

The kids were so excited about meeting Rulon that was just a great ending to the day. Good job to all involved with this tourney. Congrats Josh Yoder on an awesome day and first place finish!!!!!

Well done overall, just wondering why matches weren't moved to open mats. Great tourney!

Re: Grade School Junior High State @ Vets
Post by r3sunsplus1 on Feb 23, 2009, 12:37pm
Well I can tell you that at the end of the day my mat (mat 1) had 4 matches moved to our mat to keep things moving along. So I can testify to the fact that matches were moved to our open mat. This was done by our ref who was by far one of the nicest refs I have ever met in this big world of wrestling. He wanted to keep things moving for everyone and then repeatedly thanked the clock keeper and I for staying to take on 4 more matches. I was also very proud of the two little guys on my mat who took turns between running bout sheets and being towel boy. Thankfully, they paid attention all day long, worked long hours happily, took only very short breaks to use the restroom and were thrilled to be paid with pizza and drinks! Thanks boys!!! One even belonged to me and he didn't pester or annoy me once all day! LOL!!!!

First time poster- Long time reader. Thanks go out to The Predicament for their fine in depth coverage,
the photogs from www.lifeinpixelsphoto.com who did a great job, The head table staff who kept on top of the game throughout the day,
to the wonderful volunteers at all the tables,
to the generous and talented officials who were just great,
to Coach Wes Creason simply one of the best,
To Rulon Gardner- A mountain of a man who understands that one is never taller than when he stoops to help a child and Yes its OK if he's one of my hero's,
to BG Fenwick and husband who handle awards and all that that entails with great mastery,
to Brian's assist. Chris Perez Van Dam who learned alot by being there and understands that its cool to give back to the sport,
to all the parents who kept their emotions in check throughout the long day.
I had the pleasure of working with all of you only serving to fuel the desire to keep promoting this sport, the people in it and those the sport serves.
Finally, to Brian Keck- I've known BK for many years and know that his primary goal is to provide a safe, competitive and fun atmosphere for the kids as they struggle to realize their hopes and dreams. Even as the day wore on and the patience of some grew short we all realized that a job was done and done well.
BK brought it together and achieved his goals for the kids. Thanks BK and to one and all. Best to you All! The Announcer- Scott Casber, Takedown Wrestling Radio

I find it interesting that some people say this one is the big dog in Iowa, no its that one. and this one will never be, and all that Bull shipper, yet the Big ones don't seem to care if they are or not, Yesterday, we got to see, how when wrestling organizations combine and help each other we get wrestling at its VERY Best.
and I didn't have to travel to another state to get it. it was Here in Iowa, in the BARN.

Scott: I'd like to say I appreciate the work you do with takedown wrestling radio. There isn't enough media coverage of our sport. Every morning I listen to the sports radio guys talk about Iowa basketball, and break down every facet of the previous loss, blah, blah, blah. When we have two of the best college teams in the country and the talent we have from the youth to the high school levels, it's nice to see someone paying attention.

I wanted to send out a BIG THANK YOU for all involved working the tournament. It ran smooth and efficient. It was one of the best ones my son has ever wrestled in. It was a true learning experience for him. It was great because he learned he has to wrestle hard to earn a metal and it was just not given. He learned how to lose to better wrestlers. He learned that when you get beat you pick yourself up and wrestle back hard. He found out what it was like to wrestle in a true bracket system not just round robins. Sportsmanship goes along way in the sport of wrestling and you are friends at the end of the day and you make new friends along the way. In ending, the state tournament made him the most proud of his 8th. place medal than any of his 1st. place medals or trophies this year! Keep up the good work!

Mat 3 had some great wrestling on it as well. Division 2 55 pounds had some great competition, multiple state champions (USA, AAU, Grade School) and multiple National placers (AAU, Tulsa).

Here you go, Tanner Cowan met Schwenke in round 3 and won 4-2 but then they turned around and wrestled again for 3rd and 4th place and Darrien won 8-7. Our bracket was a good bracket. Most of the matches were close. Nate had to battle for 6th place. Gonzalez won this bracket. He is very strong.

Great tourney, great competiton!!!!!! Instead of the Rollers takin over the Winter Nationals perhaps Mr. Keck wouldn't mind. 1 thing that always gets me when I see it, is how the kids all become good friends after the tourney is over. My boy has had some trouble lately of being a good sport when he loses but then to see how everyone in his bracket got along waiting for their medals kinda put me at ease. In fact, the kid he got beat by and him were jokin around on the podium and became pretty good buddies. All in all, very good tourney, meant some tough kids I never heard of and really good parents. Alos, Rulon seemed to be a great guy with alot of patience...................

Thanks to Mr. Keck and volunteers for a very well-run tournament! This was our first year attending and we definately plan on returning next year. The competition was fantastic, our 3rd grader got whooped on, but after he came out from hiding upstairs had several very nice families do their best to cheer him up. It's really the people that make wrestling such a good sport... Rulon Gardner was even better with the kids than I'd imagined. Our boys took their autographs and pictures to school to show to friends- he was so nice to each of them, what an ambassador for the sport!

I really have to give Mr. Keck alot of credit because I remember all the heat he took on these forums two years ago. He stuck it out and ran one of the best tournaments I have ever been too. My Son did not even come close to placing but it was an overall wonderful experience for our whole family. Here is why this event was so great.
1. Weigh-ins were quick and efficient.
2. Wrestling Started at 9:00am sharp
3. The event program was awesome
4. Not an empty mat all day
5 Awesome Scoreboards. Very big and easy to see all around the arena.
6 Rulon Gardner was GREAT. Very patient with all the kids. Very humble guy.
7. The Annoucer was great.
8. Great Awards. My son did not receive one but his teammate showed us his.
9 Great Competition. My Son is 28-9 so far this season but went 2-2 in this tournament.
10. Consessions was good. My only complaint it was a little expensive for a hotdog.
We look forward to coming back next year.
